With working with cameras and lighting one must
often see how far production can go in the eBook Television Production by
Gerald Millerson and Jim Owens, they discuss a wide variety of
techniques and styles for a production team or those interested in the field. One
of the first things they talk about in the book is the size of the production team.
In our capstone group we have about a small size of 5 people working on the
video, a production crew greatly differ in size as the book says. There is not
a “perfect” size for all crews. The right size for a project depends on the
type of project that you are working on and the preferences of the director.
Since Owen is the director of the reality show, he believes the amount people
we have is perfect and I agree. At one end of the scale, there are directors
who initiate the main idea, they write the script and even design the stage and
cast the characters. A crew is there to help the director make his vision
become true, that is the productions teams’ job. There are different roles a production crew
has there is the executive producer,
producer, assistant producer/ associate producer, director, asst. director,
production asst, floor manager/stage assistant, technical director, make-up
artist, costume designer, graphics designer, camera operator, lighting
operator, audio technician and video editor.

No such thing as bad Publicity?
One might hear the phrase "There's no such thing as Bad publicity" this might be true if you were a former child/teen star and peak and know is trying to regained the fame back but in communications and marketing bad publicity is such can be worse than no publicity at all.
PR campaigns for any businesses takes a lot of research about the company, what it stands for and what problems need to be addressed and solved. PR also does research for its target market a well. When it comes to PR campaigns many try to hold events, prizes, ads, anything to get the word out and to promote good fortune on the consumers as well as the company. Whenever a business or person who represents a company or themselves it is ideal that any news on them is good news, they want to be notice by the media this is called Publicity.
However there is a thing called bad publicity, whenever a PR stunt goes horribly wrong,
ex: here is a Twitter feed about McDonald's cuisine

VS.
Here is pic of Red Bulls PR stunts
Red Bull, British Airways and Pimm's are among the brands to be included in the Guinness World Records 2014 for their PR stunts.
"The latest edition of the book, which launches today, hands Red Bull Stratos the world record for most-watched live stream of all time.
"The latest edition of the book, which launches today, hands Red Bull Stratos the world record for most-watched live stream of all time.
Last October's jump from the edge of space by Felix Baumgartner was watched by 8.3 million viewers live on YouTube."
The McDonald's picture is an example of Bad Publicity, it shows some are not satisfied with the food and thus creating negative PR
While Red Bull's stunts have earned them not only a place in the Guinness World Record but also boosted their sales and got a good publicity from it.
In short some examples of positive building activities:
- Sponsoring Local Events
- Selling environmental safe products
- Supporting Community events
Negative building activities:
- Pollution
- Deceptive communication
- Discrimination

Podcast: learning to listen

Podcast: learning to
listen
In an article written by Tayna
Roscorla, she writes how some students may benefit from listening to their iphone
or ipod, thanks to wonders of podcast. With
advances in communicational technology, podcasting is becoming a more renowned
form of listening to radio and know a tool for learning. So what is a podcast?
Podcasting
is online audio content that is delivered via an RSS feed. Many people liken
podcasting to radio on demand. However, in reality, podcasting gives far more
options in terms of content and programming than radio does. In addition, with
Podcasting, listeners can determine the time and the place, meaning they decide
what programming they want to receive and when they want to listen to it.
Podcasting can be used for:
1. Self-Guided Walking Tours - Informational
content.
2. Music - Band promotional clips and interviews.
3. Talk Shows - Industry or organizational news, investor news, sportscasts, news coverage and commentaries.
2. Music - Band promotional clips and interviews.
3. Talk Shows - Industry or organizational news, investor news, sportscasts, news coverage and commentaries.
4. Training - Instructional informational
materials
In the article she mentions “In
fall 2009, the university's Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning studied
a world history class of 262 students to find the answer.” And goes on by
saying “But the answer isn't yes or no — the answer depends on the student's
learning style, gender and motivation.” The study did not find any statistical difference
between the performances of students who used the text than listening to an
audio from a podcast. In subgroups,
podcast did make a difference
Three results that director of
instructional design Yianna Vovides found interesting include the following:
- Podcasts
grab attention and maintain it.
- Students
conceptually understood the content, not just remembered it, and the scale
of understanding seemed to tip toward the podcasts.
- The
students who said they weren't that motivated at the beginning of the
class scored higher on the test when they listened to the podcasts.
Also these three results that are
fascinating:
- Guys
improved their results from the pre-test to the post-test more with the
podcasts. But the women's results showed no difference.
- From
the beginning of the research to the end, the number of students who
preferred podcasts nearly tripled, jumping from 21 to 62.
- In
general, no one saw a dramatic uptick in results with the text or the
podcasts. If they did the work, they did better on the test, he said.
So it worth it?
It’s hard to say if the podcast
gives students are better understanding of concepts or ideas to help them study
rather than reading from a book. However I would like to test this idea with a
younger audience than college level students. I do believe it’s all up to the student
if he or she really “get” the material , however podcast are fun and a convenient
way of listening to a speech, idea or a story.

Statement of Intent: Possible Social media/Public relations project
For my senior capstone I would like to create a project that will not only help me better understand PR but for it to benefits others, in other words I would like to create a project that leave a legacy here at Shepherd and help and better organizations. I volunteer at the boys and girls club in Martinsburg, while talking
to Professor Kushin the idea sprung to me about a children book podcast series.
While this idea is still in development and can grow or evolve into something greater I feel it is a step up to what I want to feature in my senior Capstone. Questions that I need to answer to make this project effective are: "What do you want to Build" "Who are you trying to help" "What kind of relation do you want to have with your target audience"
These are some of the questions that still need answers to but I fell it is in the right direction, I would like to include the University into the project such as having the podcast stories on the Shepherd website or on the Communication department page. I still gathering ideas for this project I will meet with Kushin as much as possible and with the coordinator of the Boys and Girls club in Martinsburg as well.

Music Video
Manuscripts
The band I am using for my music video are called the Manuscripts, they are a local band in Martinsburg.
1.Pre production: For my pre production will set up a time to meet with the band I am going to do the music video on. They have a pretty good flexible time to shoot, I also need to find a camera to film, I would like to use a really good one for I have many ideas of shots and plan to multi edit. I have a storyboard and script details on location and how the shoot will go. I will run these ideas with my friend Cory and see what him and his band thinks. 2. production: Hopefully things will go well and i start to film them playing. I want to film them live first and then a just one with them "showing off" so I can use as b-roll.
3. post production: I want to use multiple shots of the band so I can see what works best in the editorial stage. With all the work I can finish the video and add effects within the video for a more wow effect.

The road map for 333
The course syllabus for the
communication class 333; music video can help or enhance my abilities in
the field. The syllabus is well design course explanation of the class as well
as few pointers on how to blog and set up a podcast. In this day and age as
students seeking professional recognition and employers, setting
up a blog with intelligent, educated ideas and opinions and sound
research will make it easy for employers to see us a leaders of the industry.
It is not enough to have a degree but also have work to back that degree up so
to speak. Our blogs and research papers should be work that an employer can see
and admire; to show them *I didn't just fly by through school. * In the
syllabus it says:
"This course
is for anybody interested in electronic communication, video production, and
cultural criticism. COMM 300-level courses are, for the most part, practical,
hands-on and intellectual, critical-thinking courses. The course projects
are designed to help the aspiring media professional use words, imagery,
and sounds more efficiently and effectively, particularly to further social
causes and aims. " (pg. 8)
With this
helpful information one
can develop their abilities with video and sound.
My hope for this
class is to be more knowledgeable about the connection with sound and
video, sound can create and make a visual aspect to something better
or something completely different.
The syllabus
says:
Objectives
1.
To study the ways music video illuminates
Cultural
experience
2.
To learn how to produce video in music video style
Outcomes
By
the end of the course students should have an understanding of the history and
relevance of music television and music
Video,
popular culture, representation, and postmodernism.
By
the end of the course students should have the ability to produce music video
and discuss the techniques used.
The guidelines of the syllabus create
stable and profound work from the students; work that they will be proud to
show employers. The link below has a few music videos that are examples of
music videos I would like emulate for this class.

Tap for Tablets
"Now that digital lifestyle devices, tablets, wireless
phones, and other Internet appliances are beginning to come of age, we need to
worry about presenting our content to these devices so that it is optimized for
their display capabilities. "
Mike Davidson

Tablets are leading the portable venture of technology and apps throughout the world. The first tablet was made around the 1980's but back then they were known as pen computers. It was in 2002 when Microsoft renamed them as tablets, the first portable tablets with windows software in it. Although windows started to use tablets it is arguably that apple cause the trend of tablets with the Ipad.
Apple took the lead with tablet technology with apps, music, wifi, etc. All other technology manufactures such as Dell, Asus, Samsung, Acer and more started their own brand of tablets to compete with the Ipad.
Now its 2012 and apple came out with the Ipad Mini a smaller, lighter tablet with all the Ipad power it in it. What really gives the IPad the lead in tablets are apps. Because of the apple store, Itunes, app store, IPad is winning the race in tablets in the market right now.
Although apple has the edge it is not stopping Microsoft with keeping up with them. They recently came out with their new tablet the Microsoft Surface. With competition on the rise, the market with the tablets for the holidays may change the outcome. While I believe that the Ipad Mini is a bit redundant in the case its just a smaller Ipad and a bigger Iphone without celluar service; there is no denying it is one of the better tablets out there right now. With the Surface, it may change the that all in entirely.
